The Vanishing Fire Hydrant

This photograph was taken on 13 April 2009,
along Pok Fu Lam Road near St. Paul's College in Hong Kong.

The large red fire hydrant captured in the image no longer exists today.

It belonged to an early generation of Hong Kong’s heavy-duty multi-outlet fire hydrants. Much larger than ordinary hydrants, it featured multiple water outlets and was directly connected to high-capacity water mains, capable of supplying thousands of litres of water per minute for large-scale firefighting in densely populated urban districts.

For decades, hydrants like this stood quietly along the streets of old Hong Kong, silently supporting the city’s fire protection system. Its bright red body stood prominently between buildings and pavements, yet it was often overlooked as just another piece of street infrastructure.

With urban redevelopment, road reconstruction, and the modernisation of firefighting systems, these older and bulkier hydrants were gradually replaced by newer designs, quietly disappearing from the city streets.

Between the school buildings and the street, it once remained a silent yet important presence. Today, only this photograph survives as a red marker of the city’s fading memory.
